Odds and ends and tidbits

Last night I skipped yoga (gasp!), but I'm trying to be ok with it, because sometimes I just need to rest and finish my reading.

Speaking of which, I finished Veganist last night, and I must say I was pretty pleased with the whole experience. The book went through a lot of different good reasons to choose a vegan or vegan-ish diet, and at the end provided a lot of solid resources to make sure you're getting the nutrients you need, to answer health questions, to recommend good brands of vegan food options and provide suggestions for vegan eating on the go, and traveling or dining out while vegan. Good stuff. I definitely recommend it.

I also wanted to point out that the 21 day Vegan Kickstart starts in April. The link will take you to a bunch of resources, including meal ideas and answers to health questions, to help you plan to go vegan or vegan-ish. You might also consider "Meatless Mondays," as a way to introduce different foods into your diet. The way I see it, there is no harm in trying, and you might just surprise yourself.

But enough of vegan talk. I want to talk about coffee.

A friend of mine recently asked if Mr. K cooks, to which I gave no solid answer (*wink). She was inquiring because she is currently pregnant and noted that, while she normally cooks and normally loves to cook, her morning sickness has prevented her from even being able to step foot in the kitchen, much less cook. She's therefore been relying on her husband (often providing instruction from a different room) for meal preparation. She recommends that I teach Mr. K some kitchen tricks before I get pregnant (again, this is not likely in the supremely near future, but will happen eventually and it's a prospect I'm rather excited about at this point in my life).

I then went on to point out that Mr. K is definitely the maker of grilled cheese in our family. I don't have the patience and mine never seem to turn out. I can make a mean Campbell's tomato soup to accompany his grilled creation, however. He also makes a killer pasta salad that is to die for (and he always makes a ginormous bowl of it so that we have leftovers forever). And, he makes the coffee.

I find it somewhat funny that he is the coffee maker, given that he didn't actually start drinking coffee until sometime in the last year. It started with a wedding gift we received of an espresso maker (amazing!). He used to make what we refer to as the Amerikarlno, made with his flare and love. He'd get up with me in the morning and make me my cup of espresso + water. It was lovely. And then around Christmas he pointed out that he actually likes coffee and would drink it with me in the morning if we had a coffee maker. So we splurged on a nice cuisinart, and we've enjoyed coffee in the morning together ever since. And Mr. K always makes it, and he does quite a good job.

So this morning, I got up extra early (thanks to two awful nightmares) and ended up leaving for work before he was out of bed. Having not had my couple's cup to start my day, I briskly walked up to the Peet's that's around a mile away from us, bought a new travel mug (my old one died yesterday, RIP) and a lovely cup of coffee. This was a totally peaceful coffee purchase as well, because Peet's is a pretty socially responsible company, and the travel mug I bought (which will not end up wasting paper cups) is made of recycled materials. I also added in some soy milk (I forgot to eat breakfast this morning before I left, so I wanted a little more substance in my usually black coffee). I also forwent the scone that was calling my name.

Of course, my vegan start to the day was foiled when I caved to my craving for the bagel sandwich with egg, cheese and asparagus. It's going to double as lunch and breakfast today and this is the last week I'll be indulging in eggs and cheese. Plus, it tastes so good!

After purchasing my new mug and coffee, I took the T to work and as I got off at Copley, was greeted by the newspaper man. I gave him a big smile and a good morning and was greeted with an equally big smile, and a "Goodmorning, Sunshine! Have a beautiful day!" I think I will, thanks Mr. Newspaper Man.
